June 2007:
Last
month was a big month, featuring Alycia’s live performance at the Opening Night Ceremonies of the 2007 Mendocino Film Festival. Alycia performed in front of an enthusiastic crowd of about 250 people, and this marked her first public performance with a live band (guitar, drums and bass guitar). She performed several
songs from her new album, including Every Day, She Do That, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, and Eternal Flame, as well as an A Capella version of Donovan’s classic Catch The Wind. Alycia’s set lasted almost an hour and resulted in 2 standing ovations, including one which followed a heartfelt and
timely rendition of John Lennon’s classic, Imagine, which she performed solo, while also playing the keyboard. Here are a couple of photos taken at the Film Festival by photographer John Birchard. (www.birchardweddingphotography.com).
June marks the beginning of expanded marketing efforts for her debut CD, She Do That, including mailings of her CD to influential radio and Internet music programmers and various marketing outlets. Her CD
is now available for download on iTunes and can also be found at a number of other Internet outlets including www.amazon.com, www.CDBaby.com, www.indiereview.net,
www.numberonemusic.com, and a host of others. Here’s a special request: If you are one of Alycia’s fans, you can help to get the word out about Alycia’s talent and new CD by posting a “Review” on Alycia’s order page at one of the following outlets (click on the direct link):
AmazonReview, CDBabyReview, or Number1Review. These reviews (especially Amazon) help get Alycia’s CD linked to other artists’ reviews and CDs, so the more reviews and ratings, the more her name and music will get out. Thanks in advance!
June ended with a little
floury of activity: On June 22nd, Alycia was interviewed on North Bay NPR station KRCB. She was interviewed by host Charles Sepos, on his show “Curtain Call.” Sepos played various cuts from Alycia’s debut album She Do That and in between cuts he asked Alycia about the various songs, their genesis, the recording
process and other topics related to Alycia’s career. The following day on June 23rd, Alycia entertained and delighted guests at a private party in the North Bay.
We will let you know as
more exciting news develops! Stay tuned…
Spring 2007
After several weeks of delay due to printing mishaps, at end of April, Alycia’s debut album, She Do That, was finally received and began initial distribution on Amazon.com and CD Baby. In conjunction with the album being released, Alycia’s website,
www.alycialang.com was finally finished and went “Live” in April.
Alycia has been invited to headline the evening’s entertainment for the Opening Night Ceremonies of the 2nd Annual Mendocino Film Festival, which takes place on the evening of May 17th in
the village of Mendocino. Check out the official info at: Film Festival. The festival is expecting about 300 people for this gala event. This will also be Alycia’s first public
performance with a live band backing her up. We hope to get a video and/or audio recording of the event, which we can be shared on Alycia’s website after the event. Exciting stuff! Stay tuned, or if you live in the Mendocino area and can still get tickets, catch it live!
February 2007:
The album arrives! After much work and many revisions and tweaks,
Alycia’s first album was finally received from the CD manufacturer,
including the final versions of the art work, CD label, liner
notes, etc. However, the album has not been officially released
yet. This month, prior to distributing the hard copies, we are
finalizing all of the electronic distribution. By the time this
is all done sometime in March, Alycia’s debut album, She
Do That, will be available on Amazon.com, CD Baby, iTunes and
on her own website: www.alycialang.com, which is scheduled to
go “live” early in March.
As of early February Alycia’s myspace.com site went live.
To visit this great site, log onto the Internet and go to: www.myspace.com/alycialang.
You’ll immediately be greeted by music from She Do That,
as well as all kinds of info about Alycia’s current activities.
Free song samples are available there as well. Be sure to tell
your friends about it.
January
2007:
Live performance was the theme for this month. First, Alycia did
her very first Open Mic performance at the Ace-In-The-Hole Pub
in Graton, CA. As she started singing, everyone who was outside
came inside and all of a sudden the place was packed with a very
attentive audience. When she finished her first song, Every Day,
the crowd erupted into applause and appreciation. She did two
more songs, giving just a taste of more to come in the coming
year. What a warm welcome indeed!
On January 27th and 28th, Alycia performed back-to-back concerts
in Napa and Sonoma counties, sharing the evening’s bill
with the Samuel Markus trio. First, on Saturday the 27th Alycia
performed at a private House Concert at a large, beautiful home
on a ridge atop 17 acres in Kenwood, CA. The stage was perfectly
set for an intimate performance, including an excellent sound
system, perfect house acoustics and a very excited and appreciative
audience. Alycia performed a varied set which included the title
track from her album, She Do That, a previously unrecorded song
written by Alycia entitled Poem (based on a poem about poem!),
and a couple of classic Beatles tunes, interpreted in Alycia’s
own unique style. The crowd loved it all, and insisted on an encore.
Later, at the end of the evening, Alycia was asked by the Samuel
Markus Trio to join them on stage. Soon Alycia’s was jamming
with the trio, creating back-up vocals as well as unexpected improvisations
that created a whole new level of entertainment. A splendid time
was had by all.
The following night, on January 28th, Alycia and the Samuel Markus
Trio performed the show again at the Ace-In-The-Hole Pub in Graton,
where Samuel Markus had been booked in advance. What was really
great was that about 30% of the people who had been at the House
Concert the previous night came back to see the show again, most
of them bringing friends and family who had not been at the concert
the previous night. Alycia really connected with this appreciative
audience and again joined the Trio for some vocal jamming at the
end of the evening. She was asked by the Pub to come back and
perform another concert soon.
December
2006:
Alycia was invited to participate in a singer/songwriter showcase
in Santa Monica, CA., headlined by L.A. recording artist Samuel
Markus. She came prepared with a 30 minute set that included some
songs from her upcoming album and other songs that had not yet
been recorded. Her father, who had written 3 of the songs on her
album, provided accompaniment on acoustic guitar. The intimate
gig was a big success, and an opportunity to begin the process
of live performances showcasing both her singing abilities and
music from the album.
December also marked the beginning of work with Duke Design of
Los Angeles, who specializes in the creation of graphic arts in
both print and electronic form. Duke began work on the album cover,
official alycialang.com website and myspace.com site for Alycia.
Alycia worked closely with Duke, providing lots of input regarding
the look and feel that she wanted, that would reflect her own
personality as well as that of the music.
Fall
2006:
Now it was time to mix
the album. Alycia got some much needed rest and focused on her
high school classes as Craig created the rough mixes for all the
songs on the album. In September through November, the final mixes
were a created and finally by year-end, the master recording was
sent to Los Angeles for mastering by industry pro Bernie Grundman.
Also during this period, Alycia was introduced to recording executive
Mitchell Markus, who had previously founded Triloka Records in
L.A. Mitchell signed on to help with the management of all of
the tasks associated with setting up CD manufacturing, distribution
and promotion, the next important steps in the release of the
album.
Another highlight from this period was Alycia’s first professional
photo-shoot with renowned photographer Gerald Bybee (www.bybee.com).
The 10-hour shoot resulted in a portfolio of almost 1,800 photographs
showing many of the various looks that Alycia could have. Of these,
a dozen or so were selected for use on the album, website and
other marketing-related spots.
Summer
2006:
After seeing how well the initial recordings were coming out,
a decision was made to go ahead and produce an entire album of
Alycia’s music. In June of 2006, at age 15, Alycia went
back to England to record the balance of what would become her
debut album, She Do That. Alycia had spent the months leading
up to this second recording session immersed in the process of
song selection. The idea for this first album would be to present
a showcase for Alycia’s voice, spanning diverse types of
music, ranging from up-tempo pop sounds to dub to soulful interpretations
of classics. In all, 10 more songs were selected and Alycia recorded
these over a consecutive 10 day period.
Summer
2005:
Alycia visits the English countryside and begins
work on her debut album with producer Craig Pruess. Craig has
worked with many artists during the course of his career. He has
produced music for Sarah Brightman, British legend Cliff Richards,
and many film soundtracks including Bend It Like Beckham and Mistress
of Spice. Alycia was 14 years old at the time of this initial
visit, where she recorded the first 2 album songs with Craig:
These Words (which Alycia wrote) and Every Day (an original penned
by her singer/songwriter father). After several days in the studio,
Alycia came home to California while Craig began the process of
arranging and doing the rough mixes for these songs.
